Lucknow: Under the capable and visionary leadership of Minister for Urban Development and Energy, Shri A.K. Sharma, Uttar Pradesh has achieved another important milestone in the power sector. The 660 MW Unit-3 of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project has been successfully synchronized. This achievement will play a key role in meeting the growing energy needs of the state.
The project is being implemented by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a joint venture of NLC India Limited (51%) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (49%). The synchronization of Unit-3 with the 765 kV grid has been completed successfully, which is an important step towards its commercial operation (COD).
With this development, the state’s power generation capacity will increase significantly. Once the project becomes fully operational, it is expected to generate around 47.52 million units of electricity per day, helping meet the rising demand and ensuring better and uninterrupted power supply to the people.
With the addition of the third unit, the total installed capacity of the state is likely to reach around 13,388 MW. It is worth mentioning that Unit-1 and Unit-2 are already operational since December 2024 and December 2025, reflecting the steady progress of the project.
As per the allocation by the Ministry of Power, Government of India, about 93.11% of the electricity generated from this project will be supplied to Uttar Pradesh, while the remaining power will be shared with other states. This will not only meet the state’s requirements but also strengthen inter-state power balance.
To ensure long-term fuel availability, development of the Pachwara South Coal Block in Jharkhand is progressing at a fast pace. This will help in maintaining continuous and reliable power generation in the future.
The project is also designed in line with environmental standards and uses advanced technologies such as Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems. These systems will help control pollution and ensure compliance with Zero Liquid Discharge, supporting environmental protection.
On this occasion, Hon’ble Energy Minister Shri A K Sharma said that this achievement is a strong and decisive step towards making Uttar Pradesh energy self-reliant. He added that the state government is fully committed to providing reliable, uninterrupted and quality power supply to consumers.
This milestone not only highlights the progress of Uttar Pradesh in the energy sector but will also support industrial growth, attract investment, and contribute to overall economic development. The state is steadily moving towards energy self-reliance, which reflects a bright and promising future.
